It really depends whether you are intending to start an IT related business, or use your IT skills in a different field - like Internet Marketing or something. I can't really claim to be successful, only to have had some small successes (and a few failures) along the way to my ultimate goal but the one thing I would recommend first is research whether there's actually a market for your chosen business, don't assume there is one. Find out whether there's specific problems Customers need solved and whether that indicates a profitable niche you can operate in. Let me know a bit more if you like and I can see if there's something I can help with.
